Royal Inspiration
Friday, 5/12/06
Thursday afternoon, His Royal Highness, the Duke of York ’78 visited the Lakefield College School campus to tour the new facilities and speak to the students. Greeted by Head of School David Hadden, Sue Hadden, Director of Advancement Rudy Massimo, and Co-Head Students Laura Bocking and Scott Seabrooke, His Royal Highness visited classrooms, the site of the proposed Learning Commons, and the Bryan Jones Theatre. A Patron of the Round Square, he also spoke to students about their international service experiences.
His Royal Highness attended The Grove in 1977 while on a Round Square exchange from Gordonstoun School in Scotland. While at the school he participated fully in boarding school life, acting in dramatic performances and enjoying three canoe expeditions in the Northwest Territories.
In 1996, His Royal Highness was elected as a Lakefield College School trustee. He has recently agreed to also serve as trustee for the new Lakefield College School Foundation. His last visit to The Grove was in June 2003 when he was the keynote speaker for our Closing Ceremonies.
Thursday’s speech to the school community was both sincere and inspiring. His Royal Highness spoke fondly of the magical atmosphere of The Grove and how his exchange experiences made a life-long impact. He encouraged students to seize upon the unique opportunities the school makes available, especially the Round Square program. In addition, he spoke of why he supports the school so enthusiastically and reminded students of their responsibility to uphold the integrity of Lakefield College School as one of the most prestigious independent schools in Canada. In conclusion, he wished the graduating class well as they look towards their university careers and encouraged everyone to “do their homework.”
